Every character in Game of Mods is driven by a language model running on your Mac. Walk up and speak, or type: they answer aloud in their own voice, remember the conversation, and stay in character. Nothing leaves your machine. No account, no cloud, no API key.
The whole game is designed to be played by voice. Navigate the menus, start a journey, and talk to characters just by speaking. Prefer a keyboard? Every voice path has a typed twin: at the main menu, in the pause screen, and in the world. Vision-impaired players are a first-class audience, not an afterthought.
A built-in five-minute tutorial. The Host walks you through moving, looking, approaching a character, talking, pausing, and leaving. No reading required.
A journey is a short authored story: scenes, cinematic shots, and beats that react to what you do and say, with characters who have their own goals. Play ours, play the community's, then make your own.
NPCs : personality, voice, what they know and what they refuse to discuss, and a VRM avatar
Player characters : your own avatar with its own voice
Journeys : scenes, shots, beats, conditions and actions, per-chapter audio
Spaces : the places journeys happen in
Mods are data, not code: JSON plus VRM and GLB assets. There is no scripting engine, so a mod can never run code on anyone's machine. Import VRM 1.0 avatars and the license embedded in the file is checked before the mod can ship.
Browse, subscribe, and play mods without leaving the game. Publish your own; a validation pass catches broken bundles before anything is uploaded.
A 3D workbench where you talk to an Operator and load assets and avatars. Jack in, try things, jack out.
Metal 4 rendering, VRM characters, on-device Gemma 4 dialogue, and Apple speech recognition and synthesis. Playable on an 8 GB M1. 16 GB unified memory recommended for the smoothest conversations.
Characters, voice, and the creator tools are the heart of the game and are where our effort has gone. Environments are still simple and will grow through Early Access. What the community builds will shape this as much as anything we ship.

A new build is on the beta branch. To try it, right-click Game of Mods in your Library, choose Properties → Betas, and pick beta. Share your own motions Any VRM animation (.vrma) can become a motion you share on the Workshop. Put clips in the Construct's Motions folder, or leave them in Downloads. Clips from the last 14 days are found there, and the game tells you before macOS asks for access. In the Construct, ask for what you want, for example "make a motion from my wave clip", "list my motions" or "preview the wave". The motion plays on the avatar on the stage. Attach a motion to a journey or a character, and the characters in that journey can choose it when they act. Publish a motion to the Workshop as its own item. In the Studio, New Motion makes one from a clip you pick. Say "show my motions" to filter the Library to motions. Motions need 0.38 or later. For now, journeys and cha...

Meet Linda Linda is a new neural voice that runs entirely on your Mac. In English, the host, the Operator in the Studio and the First Steps narrator now speak with her. You can give any character Linda's voice in the voice picker, and new characters start with it. Lines you overhear in the world, like passing chatter and characters calling from a distance, play in each character's own voice and come from where they stand. A livelier host The host talks a little faster and brighter, and every reply is generated fresh. Its welcome no longer repeats a recent opening. Faces that react The character you're talking to looks at you, and its face shows the feeling behind its reply. Recorded face animations play in the world on each avatar's own expressions. Ready f...
Read full update on Steam ↗A new build is on the beta branch. To try it, right-click Game of Mods in your Library, choose Properties → Betas, and pick beta. One Operator, everywhere you build The Operator is now the same voice in the Construct, the Studio and NPC Studio. Ask it to make a mod, add a story beat, set up a character or dress an avatar, and it does the work and tells you what changed. It knows what you're working on, so "add a beat" or "delete this mod" act on the right thing. When it isn't sure, it asks which one. Avatar edits in plain speech Say "a little shorter", "bigger eyes", "minty green hair" or "put a navy jacket on her", and the change happens. "Undo that" takes back the last avatar change, and "done editing" takes you back to the avatars. Asks before it acts Before deleting, publishing or leaving your work behind, the Operator says exactly what it is about to do and waits for your yes. Pu...
Read full update on Steam ↗A new build is on the beta branch. To try it, right-click Game of Mods in your Library, choose Properties → Betas, and pick beta. Talk an avatar into shape In the Construct you can now dress an avatar just by describing it. Try "give her a red dress", "twin tails", "make the skirt shorter" or "gold earrings". There are evening dresses, midi and pencil skirts, jackets, pumps and sneakers, and the colour you ask for is the colour you get. You can also open an avatar again and step back through its earlier versions. The Construct and the menu The Construct is now a white room rather than a blank white screen. The main menu opens on Library, Studio and Construct first. A more careful Operator The Operator now asks before it deletes, publishes or removes anything, and "yes" applies only to the thing it named. When something goes wrong, it tells you out loud instead of going quiet. Under th...
Read full update on Steam ↗Bring Your Own Spaces Update 0.17 opens up Space creation — you can now build a Space around your own 3D environment. 🏗️ Import Shell Drop a .glb or .usdz model in as your Space's "shell" and it renders natively in-world — no conversion step, no external tooling. The new Import Shell button lives right in the Space Studio editor. 🧮 Honest budgets Imported shell geometry now counts against the shared Space cost model, so you always see exactly how much of your budget a scene is spending. 🔩 Under the hood A native USD/GLB mesh path, content-addressed shell storage, and settle-bake that resolves imported shells straight from the bundle. As always, everything runs 100% on-device on Apple Silicon.
