The world ended on a Tuesday. You've got a hole in the backyard, a shovel and a line of strangers at the gate. Some of them are carpenters, cooks and nurses. Some of them are hiding a bite.
Look them over, take their temperature, read their papers and go through their bags. Then stamp it: Admit, Quarantine or Turn Away. Everyone has a story. Some of them are even true. Get it wrong and you'll find out days later, in the middle of dinner. The checks are hands-on. Shine the penlight in their eyes, put the stethoscope to their chest, run the UV lamp over their hands and see if anything glows green. Whatever you find gets pinned on their chart, and R&D and the workbench get you better tools.
Dig through soil and rock, pour concrete, raise walls and hang blast doors. Build dormitories, a mess hall, hydroponic farms, generators, air filters, water purifiers, a med bay and a quarantine ward. Start in a backyard shelter for six and work your way down to a ten-level mega-bunker for three hundred. Mine the rock for stone, iron, copper, silver and gold, cut down the trees on your lot, and turn it all into wood, concrete, steel and parts at a saw bench, a cement mixer, a furnace and a workbench.
On the way down, move into a shopping mall's basement, a county hospital's or an army base's bunker. The mall comes with the stores' stock and more walkers out shopping at night. The hospital has a med bay and more of the sick at its gate. The base has an armory, and its nights hit harder.
Send a couple of your people out for supplies: the Gas-N-Go on Route 9, Kessler's Hardware, the sheriff's office. When something goes wrong out there they radio in, and you decide whether they pry the door or walk away. You can watch them on the county map the whole way.
Food, water, power, sleep, morale - and air. Every survivor breathes, and every generator is loud. Give people jobs, set the daily schedule and keep an eye on who's coughing.
Walkers pile up at the door. Diggers tunnel up through the floor. Vent crawlers come in through the air ducts. Spore carriers poison the air. Screamers follow the noise of your generators. And some nights, everything comes at once. Your radio warns you before dark. Use the time.
Turrets, traps, sandbags, searchlights and guards with very little training. Combat runs on its own, and you can take control of your guards when it counts. In the morning, count the losses, patch the walls and open the gate again.
In the sandbox, turn the threat up a hundred times and watch thousands of them press in round one hatch. Ring the yard with diesel trenches and light the lawn. Lay a field of blast mines and press the button. Then look at the whole bunker at once, ten levels deep, everyone in it going about their day. Photo mode hides the interface for the screenshot.
A clean isometric cutaway of a 1980s civil defense bunker: hazard paint, lamplight, CRT terminals and a shelter kit from a company that promises everything will be fine. It won't. But the monsters are cartoony, and nobody's insides end up on the outside.
Add it to your wishlist and Steam will let you know the moment the hatch opens.
