SHADOWLIGHT - GAME DESCRIPTION / REFERENCE

Shadowlight is a turn-based stealth roguelike centered around one core idea:

LIGHT MAKES YOU VULNERABLE. DARKNESS GIVES YOU THE ADVANTAGE.

The player controls a thief moving through dangerous, procedurally generated environments. Guards and monsters use light to detect the player, while darkness allows the player to remain hidden.

CORE GAMEPLAY:

- Move through dark environments while avoiding enemy vision.

- Stay in darkness to remain hidden.

- Use light and shadows strategically.

- Attack enemies from behind while they are unaware.

- Backstabs deal significantly increased damage.

- Manipulate environmental light sources.

- Close doors to block light and control visibility.

- Use sound to attract or redirect enemies.

- Use special abilities to survive and manipulate encounters.

- Explore procedurally generated areas.

- Collect materials and craft useful items.

- Deal with different enemy types with different abilities.

- Every movement matters because the game is turn-based.

The core gameplay loop is:

ENTER DARKNESS

→ OBSERVE ENEMIES

→ MANIPULATE LIGHT / POSITION

→ MOVE THROUGH SHADOWS

→ ATTACK OR AVOID

→ ESCAPE BACK INTO DARKNESS

→ CONTINUE EXPLORING

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION FOR LAST LIGHT:

Last Light should NOT copy Shadowlight's gameplay systems.

Shadowlight is:

DARKNESS

→ STEALTH

→ POSITIONING

→ BACKSTAB

→ TURN-BASED COMBAT

Last Light is:

DARKNESS

→ FLASHLIGHT / VISIBILITY

→ RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

→ ENEMY DETECTION

→ HIDING / EVASION

→ OBJECTIVE

→ EXTRACTION

Last Light's core identity should remain:

"LIGHT KEEPS YOU SAFE, BUT LIGHT ALSO ATTRACTS THEM."

The flashlight is primarily a survival and exploration tool, not a weapon.

The player should feel tension between:

"I need light because I can't see."

and:

"If I turn on my flashlight, something might see me."

Last Light should remain a real-time 2D survival horror / stealth experience with handcrafted levels, environmental objectives, limited resources, hiding, supernatural creatures, and increasingly dangerous locations.

Do not add turn-based combat, backstab-focused gameplay, or Shadowlight's specific abilities and mechanics.

Use Shadowlight only as inspiration for the high-level concept of light and darkness creating tension.

Last Light must maintain its own identity, mechanics, art direction, progression, enemies, objectives, and gameplay loop.
