About
Hauberk Dungeon is an HD remake of the traditional roguelike Hauberk. The original was written by Bob Nystrom — an engineer on Google's Dart language team, previously eight years developing games at Electronic Arts, and author of the much-loved Game Programming Patterns and Crafting Interpreters, both free to read online.
Hauberk itself is his classic roguelike, released as open source under the MIT licence. This remake builds on that code: the algorithms and number tuning he refined are kept intact, while the presentation is rebuilt with high-definition graphics, a more modern UI, and far more vivid art — and the grind is replaced with automated exploration.
100 Floors, One Dead End
Terrain, rooms and furnishings are generated fresh each floor, so no two descents are alike. And what waits on floor 100 is no elite mob — it is the Nameless Unmaker.
152 Monsters, Each With Its Own Temper
Cowardly, fearless, immobile, protective, unique — five behaviour traits mix and match. Some flee the moment they bleed, some never back off, some refuse to budge, some will take a hit meant for their kin. Read their temper and you'll know whether to chase or to route around.
171 Items Across 85 Affixes
Weapons, armour, trinkets, potions and scrolls, rolled with 85 affixes, plus 18 crafting recipes. The same axe can be a completely different thing from one run to the next.
No Two Floors Look Alike
50 types of terrain: water, tall grass, spiderwebs, bridges, braziers, chests and barrels — each one setting a different pace for how you probe ahead.
Build Your Character
5 races, 3 classes, 13 skills, 9 spells, 12 elemental resistances, with weapon mastery split across 7 weapon types. Where your stat points go, which skills you train, which affix you stack — that is what decides how deep you get.
What's Remade
- High-definition graphics: the original's character-based display is replaced with HD tiles, monsters and item art
- A modern UI: gear and stat panels, hover details for items and monsters, a codex and an adventure guide — keyboard and mouse both work, and every common action has a clickable button
- Automated exploration: hand it over and it explores, clears and loots in one go; spend your time on your build, and take back control whenever you want
- Chinese / English UI: switch any time, no restart
Also
- Optional permadeath, if you want it hardcore
- Turn-based: one step is one turn, think before you move
- Single-player, no internet required, save whenever you like
Steam currently lists 7 Oct 2026 as the release date.
