Clear the landfill, one piece at a time

Recycled is a first-person game about cleaning up a landfill. There is no timer, no enemy and no way to fail. You pick up trash, take apart what needs taking apart, and put every piece into the bin where it belongs. Play alone or with up to three friends.

The Trash Mountain

In the middle of the landfill stands a hill of about 33,000 pieces of trash: garbage bags, cardboard, bottles, cans, jars, jackets, pizza boxes, umbrellas, teddy bears, paint buckets, old televisions and phones, microwaves, office chairs, bicycles and more. The hill was made by letting every item fall and settle with physics, so each piece lies where it landed.

Every item you can see can be picked up. Take something from the bottom of the pile and whatever was resting on it slides and tumbles down.

Collect

Put items in your bag. The bag holds 20 items.

Carry bigger items in your hands, or throw them.

Counters show how much of each part of the hill is left and which materials are still missing.

Take it apart at the workbench

Some trash is made of more than one material. A PET bottle has a cap and a paper label. A garbage bag holds cans, newspapers and rags. A microwave has screws, a metal cover and a circuit board.

Carry these items to a workbench, clamp them on and hold the button. The parts come off one after another, in a sensible order: the screws before the cover, the cover before the board. Each part, and finally the empty body, goes straight into your bag. Two players can take different parts off the same item at the same time.

Stand at a bin to empty the matching items from your bag, or throw items in from a distance. If something goes into the wrong bin, it bounces back out with a hint about where it belongs. Nothing is ever lost.

Together or alone

Up to four players can clear the same landfill. Invite friends through Steam: everyone works on the same hill and sees the same counters. The world is saved on the host's computer in one of three save slots, together with every player's bag.

Progress you can see

The hill is divided into four sectors. Each sector has its own counter and earns a star when it is completely cleared. The game saves automatically every five minutes and every time a sector is finished.

Early Access

Recycled is in Early Access. The core of the game is complete and the Trash Mountain can be cleared from start to finish. We plan to add more areas, more items and more ways to play, guided by player feedback. The Early Access section on this page explains the plans in detail.
