Onmal is a free app for reading teammates' speech and story dialogue as translated captions. Version 0.3.1 is being prepared for free Early Access on Windows and Mac.
Actual Mac interface · 0.3.1 (theme and settings can be changed).
Bundled models handle speech recognition and Korean–English translation on your computer. Local translation needs no separate service account or personal API key. Model selection is automatic by default and partial captions are off. Opening the app does not start listening; you choose when to start.
Choose a use case and save whether the glossary is enabled separately for each use case. The same choice applies to speech normalization and translation. Game terminology is off by default in story mode.
Choose an audio source and languages, then start or stop translation. Adjust caption size, position, width, lines and background in settings. Windows includes a silent caption preview. The interface follows a supported device language on first launch and offers 31 UI languages. Wording and layouts are still being refined.
Type text, choose its input and output languages, and copy the result when needed. There are 103 Steam-language options in the text-language lists. Local availability, required model packs, personal API support, unsupported routes and experimental status differ by language. A selectable language is not a promise of speech support or verified translation quality.
An optional M2M100 model and Noto font pack extends supported offline text directions. Download size and required space are shown before installation. Expanded translation is experimental and the pack is separate from the bundled Korean–English models. Chinese script distinctions and right-to-left text display are handled.
Personal APIs are optional. When selected, text is sent to the chosen provider; internet access and provider charges may apply. Supported languages vary by provider. Speech recognition stays local.
Version 0.3.1 is a planned public alpha, before a full 1.0 release. It targets Windows 11 64-bit and macOS 15 or later; the Mac bundle contains Apple Silicon and Intel versions. Features and model choices differ by platform.
Additional checks on Windows hardware, fresh Steam installations, physical Intel Macs, voice accuracy and concurrent game performance are still pending. Minimum and recommended specifications are provisional. Quality and performance are not guaranteed across all languages, games or hardware. Windowed or borderless mode is recommended for game captions. Mac requires system-audio capture permission. Music, effects and speech from the same app are not automatically separated.
Free Early Access will open after Steam approval and pre-release validation. User feedback will guide the beta and full release.
Steam currently lists 26 Oct 2026 as the release date.
