Thank you to everyone who played the demo during Next Fest and took the time to tell me what didn't work. I read every comment, some of them more than once. My plan was to leave the demo as it was and put everything into the full release. But seeing your responses, I decided the demo deserved better, so I made it a priority and spent the past weeks working through your feedback one by one. The biggest message was clear: battles were hard to read. So that's where most of my time went. What's new Faster loading: battles load much faster, and the download is about 1.8 GB smaller. See your men: buildings and tall grass fade when they hide your bands, and the facing compass now draws on top of everything. Clearer numbers: strength is shown simply as men, with no more ratios. Smarter enemies: cavalry closes in and attacks, and attackers press while defenders hold. Remembered formations: you...
Read full update on Steam ↗Hello, everyone. Thank you to everyone who has marched through the demo since it went out in early October. Your feedback has been the loudest voice in the camp this week, and a lot of what follows is a direct answer to it. Here is what's been on the workbench. A first fight, not a tour Several of you told me the opening felt like reading a manual before you'd ever given an order. So I've been rebuilding it. The idea: your very first act should be a fight. A short, guided skirmish teaches movement, striking, facing, bracing and formation one step at a time, then hands you the company. Along the way I've been cutting tutorial cards, not adding them. It's still in development and I'm playtesting it hard. Co-op, getting sturdierParty decisions are now shared: the host marches, the party advises, and everyone can see who chose what. Invites reach the right table, and refusals show up on t...
Read full update on Steam ↗I'm a solo dev, and I've built and playtested Free Company on Steam Deck the whole way through, not bolted it on at the end. The controls, the on-screen text size, and the battle interface were all tuned on the device across a lot of Deck sessions. What that means for you:Full controller support out of the box. The default layout plays the entire demo, no settings to change, no mouse or keyboard needed, and the on-screen prompts match your controller.Runs at the Deck's native 1280x800 at a smooth, playable framerate.Interface text is sized to stay readable at arm's length on the Deck screen.Naming your company and your saves brings up the Deck's on-screen keyboard, so there's no reaching for a physical keyboard. Free Company is in the process of getting officially Deck Verified. It's built and tested on Deck, with verification in progress. The demo is free and it's part of Steam Next...
Read full update on Steam ↗Demo Update, and the Road to Launch The demo has been out a little while now, and watching people take up the seal and run their own company has been the best part of this whole project. Thank you to everyone who has played it, broken it, and sent me notes. Here is a demo update built straight from that feedback, plus a look at where the company goes next, because the demo was never the finish line. It was the first camp on a longer road. What just landed in the demo A round of fixes, a lot of it from the Steam Deck: No more long-session freeze. A memory leak could lock up a battle load after you'd played several in a row, mostly on handhelds. Found it and put it down. Play as long as you like. Night battles you can actually see. Some night fights, especially in the forests, were coming out near pitch black. Night now has a floor, so it stays readable while keeping its cold mood. Cont...
Read full update on Steam ↗Another week heads-down on Free Company. It was a big one, so here's what's been on the workbench. Some of it new, some of it still being hammered into shape.A narrator for the chronicleThe thing I'm most excited about: the company's story is starting to be spoken. I've been building a voice layer around Cornelius, a grave late-tenth-century chronicler who reads the omens, the battles, and the small exchanges between your captains around the fire. This week the first recordings went in. Chronicle and arc lines, and the first hundred of the road-and-campfire stories are recorded and playing in my build.I also did a pass so those conversations actually follow by ear. When two of your captains go back and forth, you can now tell who's speaking without reading a word. Which mattered more than I expected once I started listening instead of reading.More to find on the roadThere's more to st...
