The solar system, at true scale, with every planet exactly where it really is today.
BARYUM is a first-person space sim set in an astronomically accurate solar system. The Sun sits at the origin, the planets orbit at real astronomical units, and their positions are computed from real orbital elements — fly out tonight and Jupiter is where Jupiter actually is. You begin as a CADET docked at the International Space Station, with a small ship, an empty cargo hold, and a flight computer that talks back.
Eight planets and sixteen moons, from Mercury to Triton. Saturn's rings and the full Titan-to-Mimas family. Jupiter's bands churning under procedural turbulence, with all four Galileans in attendance. Mars and the Moon rendered from real NASA colour and elevation data, close enough to read the crater floors. The distances are real, which means they are enormous — a time-warp drive compresses the long crossings, and you will still feel how far apart everything is.
Dock at the ISS, orbiting Earth at its true altitude, and take contracts. Nine kinds of work: planetary surveys, resource runs, reconnaissance, bounty warrants, tourist charters, convoy escort, derelict salvage, fleet interdiction, and the anomaly investigations that carry the story. Bank the credits, and climb five officer grades from CADET to MAJOR — each one gated behind an Academy examination you have to sit and pass.
Hold position over an icy moon and fill your bays with ice, gas or ore, then run it back to the station and sell. Convert bays into fuel tanks, oxygen reserves, a third weapon mount, a cloaking unit or an automatic hull patcher. Sixteen hulls sit in the hangar, from the CADET trainers up to the PROSPECTOR and the FORTRESS.
The lanes are not empty. Pirate wings run patrols, and Aurum Syndicate interceptors hunt anyone carrying a bounty. Answer with cannons, homing missiles and an EM disruptor that shuts a hull down cold — if you can manage the heat. Push far enough up the contract board and a dreadnought comes out to meet you, turret hardpoints and all.
Hull, fuel, oxygen and radiation are all counting down. Burn your reserves too far from the station and you are drifting, waiting on a rescue ship that may not arrive in time. Take one hit too many and the only way out is the self-destruct.
An anomaly detected near Neptune defies every model. Your investigation leads you toward the outer reaches of the solar system, into a region where instruments falter and nothing behaves as it should. Something is waiting out there, in the dark.

Nine contract types and a story campaign across the outer system
Five ranks, earned through Academy examinations
Ship-to-ship combat against two rival factions
Sixteen hulls, with weapons, armour, engines and modules to buy and fit
Mining, cargo trading and passenger charters

The LaboratoryThe ISS has a new station tab. Once you hold LIEUTENANT certification, the LAB opens: research projects you pay for in credits, then complete with flight time - the lab needs live data from the ship, so research only advances while you're out flying, not while docked. One project runs at a time, and what you research is yours for the whole career: it carries over to every ship you fly, even after losing one.The first project is Gun Aim Assist. Guns, autocannons and the disruptor steer their rounds onto a target's intercept point when you fire within 4 degrees of it. You still have to point at the pirate - it forgives a near miss, it doesn't aim for you - and the lead pipper turns green while it holds. You can switch it off any time from the lab.MarketThe ISS market has a filter: ALL, AVAILABLE, AFFORDABLE or INSTALLED, on every page. Change it with (LT/RT on a controller...

The Hauler, the Fighter, the Interceptor and the Syndicate Dreadnought are all new, far more detailed models, each in its company's colours: rust-red bands on the miners' scavenged ships, gunmetal and gold on the Syndicate's. A new civilian transport. The ship you shepherd on ESCORT contracts, and the one adrift in a DISTRESS CALL, is now a white-and-blue passenger liner with portholes down both flanks. Reactor flames. Engines now burn with a real exhaust: a white-hot throat, a yellow-orange body with turbulence rolling down it, and shock diamonds when a ship is pushed hard. The flame stretches with speed, so a ship's tail tells you how fast it is going. Lit cockpits. Canopies and portholes glow faintly, so a ship in shadow still shows where its crew sits, and the Dreadn...
Read full update on Steam ↗A new kind of contract, a ship that needs you to be quick, and a long list of fixes from your reports. Distress calls A new contract type: DISTRESS CALL. A transport is stranded somewhere in the system with survivors aboard and ten minutes of air. Reach it, hold the collect key to bring them across, and get them back to the ISS. It needs a tourist room fitted - the same room a sightseeing charter uses. If you have been putting off that bay conversion, this is what it is for. It is the only contract in the game that can fail on a clock. If the air runs out, the transport stays where it is. You can still fly out to it. There is just nothing left to do there. Missions The board varies where it sends you. It could hand you the same planet several contracts running. Sightseeing passengers now stay aboard until you dock. They used to be put off the instant the orbit completed - in orbit aro...
Read full update on Steam ↗Something new to fly out and do, a soundtrack you choose yourself, and a long pass over the worlds you fly past. Missions A new contract type: servicing. Until now every job was shoot it, scan it or carry it. This one is hold station and work. Servicing call - fly out to a satellite somewhere in the system, hold formation alongside it and work through the list. The bird is still flying when you leave; it turns under its own attitude control and lights up to tell you the job took. ISS servicing - a maintenance round on the station itself. It is on your doorstep, so it is rationed: fly other work and the station calls again when it needs you. Both are open at CADET, so they are on the board from your first shift. A new decoration, Technician, for a hundred completed calls. The worlds Every airless world's relief was re-derived from the measured altimetry. Three separate faults came out...
Read full update on Steam ↗Most of this update came from players writing in. Thank you — please keep doing it. The sky Two changes you will notice within a minute of launching. The Milky Way has been reworked. It is a real all-sky photograph, and it read like one — an even haze laid over everything. The faint wash is gone now, the dust lanes are properly dark, and the core holds its warmth. The band has structure instead of being one smear of light. Distant planets grow in from a speck. They used to appear at a fixed distance, already large — Jupiter arrived out of nothing at roughly eight times the width of a full moon. Now they resolve as a point of light from almost an astronomical unit away and grow the whole way in, rings and moons with them. Flight Fixed: the autopilot could sail straight past the ISS and coast for millions of kilometres before turning around, sometimes more than once. It now keeps enough...
