War Footing is a turn-based strategy game that puts you at the highest level of military command to mobilize a nation for defense rather than lead troops on the field. 8 scenarios offer distinct starting conditions, resource constraints, and enemy configurations.
You are the Minister of Defense. You control the budget, the procurement contracts, the political relationships, and the force structure. Whether the army that meets the enemy is ready is entirely down to the decisions you make before the first shot is fired.
Each turn represents a week. You'll spend them sourcing equipment from foreign suppliers or your own domestic industry, training and assigning units, and managing political stability to keep the budget flowing. When the invasion begins, the army you built is the army you fight with.
Raise and outfit units from company to brigade level. Over 180 equipment types — small arms, armor, artillery, aircraft, and air defense systems — each with distinct trade-offs in cost, capability, and availability.
Military spending doesn't happen in a vacuum. Diplomatic obligations and political stability compete for the same resources. Ignoring them has consequences.
Battles resolve at the operational level - sector by sector, week by week. Outcomes depend on what you built: unit readiness, doctrine fit, equipment quality, and where you chose to deploy. A complex combat simulation rewards having combined arms and knowing your enemy.
I've let the demo fall behind the current dev version, but that's now fixed! This will feature all of the new fixes and features that are in the full version, while still limited to just one scenario. A few highlights:Updated maintenance system to make it easier to see the effect of your maintenance platoonsIncreased penalties for fully losing a sectorNew vehicles, including the Chieftain, Mirage 2000, and moreWe're now well under a month until release, and things are progressing nicely! Six out of eight scenarios are now balanced, and I'm making small QoL changes along the way.
Read full update on Steam ↗Development updates are slowing down as I turn my attention to the less-glamourous things - bug-fixing and balancing. No features have been added since the last update, but I've made several balance changes and the "Force Modernization" scenario is now balanced for use. This is live on the current default branch for testers.Next up is the "Industrial Giant" scenario. In this scenario, the player starts with almost no equipment or units, but they have a ton of production capacity to build quickly. Keeping income up and licensing the right equipment will be the key to victory. In addition, I have at least one new vehicle I plan to add to the game, and I'm considering several others. I've also started devoting more attention to marketing. I now have the game active on Keymailer for streamers to request keys, and I'm working on contacts with some other publications to help get the word ou...

Read full update on Steam ↗ChangesThe demo has been updated to V0.8.6 with a few minor changes:Fixed a bug where air units could prevent enemies from taking ground in edge casesAdded code in the background to enable new scenario setupsUpdated the equipment percentage display to be an average of all equipment categories; Equipment percentage as impacts readiness is unaffectedOther minor stability/bug fixesI also wanted to say thank you to everyone who has played the demo - it's been great seeing the feedback and seeing so many people playing something we've built. Next UpNext up is going to be a rework of the economy system. This is in progress right now, though I'm not sure if we'll update the demo with it or if it'll have to wait until full release. We plan to publish an updated roadmap next week with upcoming changes & release dates. Thanks!
Read full update on Steam ↗Download and play the War Footing demo now!The demo features an accelerated scenario, ensuring that players can experience what the game has to offer. We've also added an updated tutorial that walks the player through some early game decisions to introduce concepts in an easier way. We're on track for a September full release, so stay tuned, and I hope you enjoy the demo!
Read full update on Steam ↗I've updated the game with a few new items, and the full change log is below for review. The main change is an air rework: rather than assigning all air units before the end of a turn, air units can now be scrambled in response to a battle. Ground attack aircraft can now attack enemy units where there isn't a battle taking place (reducing wasted turns) or respond to battle in multiple sectors. Scrambled air-to-air aircraft have a slight effectiveness penalty. While this makes aircraft more flexible, it also costs readiness. Aircraft used too much will suffer degraded readiness making them less effective. In other news, the demo is still on track for July 17. I'm going through some final balance testing now to ensure it gives a good player experience. V0.8.4Fixed equipment percentage calculationsIncreased training speed for unitsCreated diminishing returns where dramatically outnumberi...
Read full update on Steam ↗First, I've submitted the first build of the demo for review, keeping us on track for a mid-July demo release. I'm excited to get this in the hands of players - make sure you wishlist War Footing so you don't miss it! The demo is going to feature one scenario specifically designed to showcase features the game has to offer. Before release, I plan to spend more time balancing to make sure it's just right and also streamlining the tutorial so there's less reading, more playing. Second, check out TortugaPower's videos on YouTube if you'd like a look at an earlier build of the game. He's done a great job showing off the gameplay, and I sincerely appreciate it.And finally, here are some notes on updates to the game: V0.8.3Updated Main Menu GraphicsIncreased cost/decreased production effort for anti-tank weaponsFixed an error with how decimals for unit readiness are displayedChanged how sco...
Read full update on Steam ↗I'm excited to share the first dev update on War Footing! While it's just come to Steam now, it has been in development as a digital game for about 7 months, and existed as a board game concept for a long time prior to that. The first major milestone I'm looking at is releasing the demo, which is tentatively planned for mid-July. All of the content is in place for the demo, but it just needs additional playtesting & balance to ensure that we have a good sample of gameplay featured. Aside from that, work continues on the game overall. All planned features are in the game at this point, and all work is focused on polish, balance, and stability. Here's a non-exhaustive list of what's been updated lately in the development builds:V0.8.0Integrated new art & logosComplexity limits for maintenance hangars & airbase capacity no longer apply to helicoptersChanged airbase capacity levelsUpdated...
