Take charge of history’s greatest war machines in Hearts of Iron IV , a grand strategy wargame that challenges your strategic abilities and political insight. Refight World War II at the head of nation from the time period, building up an industrial powerhouse and a diplomatic alliance that will effectively wage war on ideological opponents.
Hearts of Iron IV is more than a historical simulation. Alternate historical paths open up with almost every decision you make, from small ones such as where to launch your attack to crack open Fortress Europe, to large ones, such as whether to re-establish democracies or long forgotten monarchies.
In Hearts of Iron IV , you can plan the military strategy almost down to the rivets, as you design division templates for your armies, research new modes of production and means of destruction, set out factory instructions and pursue political objectives. Almost no part of the war goes untouched as you guide a nation of your choice through humanity’s darkest hour.
Death or Dishonor: focuses on eastern and central European middle powers
Together for Victory: focuses on British Commonwealth nations
Waking the Tiger: focuses on China and Japan

Generals! With the weather becoming more gloomy and the summer on its way out, we bring the last “Summer” release. This will be the last patch that specifically targets Thunder at our Gates and brings a few additional pieces of content for the countries that were introduced with it. This patch also comes with a solid number of balance changes that were introduced from the Open Beta Summer Edition™ that we thought would be good to roll out sooner. The main reasoning for this was that there had been quite a few issues around balance that we did not address before the summer break and we did not want to push them further ahead longer than was necessary. I also want to say a big ‘Thank you’ for all the feedback we have received around the topics that we touch upon in this patch, as well as all of you who playtested the Open Beta. It is very valuable to have a wider range of testing so we...
Read full update on Steam ↗Hello Generals, Admirals and Air Chief Marshals! Swedish summer is over, and we were blessed as it lasted a good 5 weeks. We’d already started work on the 1.19.3 patch before, and we’ve been at work putting the finishing touches for the last several weeks. And while dates are always subject to change our plan is to release that on September 17. Patch 1.19.3 wraps up our active post-release Thunder at our Gates work, it contains a new secret path for Australia & some additional content for late game Siam & Indonesia. Besides that it also contains a plethora of bug fixes & balancing. Next DLC? You may have seen our Romania Dev Corners, and we’re very excited about that releasing soon. On a related note, though, we have decided to delay our next major expansion. Typically we would start to talk about what is next for HoI around this time, but we looked at where we are and have made the d...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Hello, I’m Zwirbaum, Game Designer for Hearts of Iron, and I want to welcome you to yet another Open Beta SE™ (Not really trademarked) Update for Hearts of Iron IV. This week I am bringing more of the experimental features and changes, which may or may not end up in the game integrated into the main branch. That’s why your feedback is important and to let me know how you feel and how it plays with the current set of changes, as well as more of those that are coming. As usual there will be more of my ramblings in the Developer Commentaries in the Patch Notes, and I will be looking at the messages across different platforms, but that is pretty much all from me in this Update, as I have to write something that will be released upon you, very quite soon. Thanks for reading, and until next time, Farewell! /Zwirbaum —— Hello, We managed to sneak in one teeny tiny core tech update...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Hello, I’m Pdxen, Tech Lead for Hearts of Iron and I want to welcome you to the second update of the Summer Open Beta. In this update we are changing the topic from balancing to updating the tech stack of the game. A lot has happened with computers since Hoi4 was released. Back then, new CPUs used to have 4 cores and around 8 hardware threads, and all of those cores were heterogeneous. All but the lowest end CPUs have more cores and hardware threads today, and not necessarily homogeneous cores anymore. In this update we’re updating the threading libraries used in HoI4, with the aim to improve performance on some machines. Considering the fundamental change with this update and the wide variety of machines that people are playing the game on, we appreciate your help to verify that there is no unforeseen deterioration for specific hardware configurations before we push the cha...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Hello, I’m Zwirbaum, Game Designer for Hearts of Iron, and I want to welcome you to the first update of the Open Beta SE™ (Not really trademarked). To avoid writing too much, and boring everyone to the death, as I am fairly sure - you will likely skip to the patch notes section anyways. For those that are not skipping immediately to the patch notes, I want to say thanks everyone for sharing your feedback and opinions, and engaging in discussions with me, that was incredibly helpful! Now this update may contain even more of the highly experimental changes, so stay tuned, and look through the patch notes to look for them. They will likely (if I will not forget) be either mentioned in the developer commentary in regards to them, that they are experimental changes, or directly next to it. Anyways, that’s it for this update. Thanks for reading, and until next time, Farewell! /Zwi...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Greetings from sunny Stockholm to everyone, I’m Batya, Game Director for Hearts of Iron. The summer period is upon us and I wanted to share some information with you all. Unlike the norm of armies planning summer offensives, game developers actually do the opposite and take time off. Of course I am not here to just tell you we will be out for the summer, instead I want to talk about the Open Betas we’ve been running in the last few months. Some of you might have seen, or even opted into, the betas that we ran for Naval changes and also the Anniversary patch. First of all a big thank you to everyone who involved themselves and provided feedback. It is important for us to co-operate with our community to make a better game and that is exactly what we want to do more of. I’d like to introduce another beta initiative codenamed ‘Sommarfältprov’, which mainly aims at re-balancing...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Today marks the last pre-summer patch with fixes and tweaks to Thunder At Our Gates. After this the team will have limited presence in the office for the summer period. We know that this patch does not hit all the sought after balance changes but for that we’d like to refer to you a new Open Beta that we will be running over summer that will address some of those issues. For now, be fully immersed in the rumble in the jungle with the summer heat seeping through your windows. See you all after summer! ROLLBACK For this release we’ve added the option to roll back to our recent Patch 1.19.1. This is useful for players that have saved games that they would like to finish, before moving onto 1.19.2. Right click the game in Steam Go to Properties, then Game Versions & Betas Select 1.19.1 Default Public Version will use the latest public build, in this case 1.19.2 If you are wonder...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Thanks for all of the feedback we’ve received over the last few days. We’re hard at work addressing as much of it as possible and plan to incorporate more into another patch that will happen later down the line. The main issues we wanted to address were the country selection screen being broken in several mods, as well as an exploit regarding ‘Force Attack’. Both of these issues are fixed now alongside a bunch of other bug fixes and balance changes. Besides letting us know what to focus on, I’d also like to ask if there are any changes people would like to see regarding the patch notes. For example I’ve bounced between using country tags and full names for highlighting purposes. I’d like to know if there’s a preference. /Batya PATCH NOTES Balance Blockade Runner admiral trait requirement reduced from 37 to 32 knots to allow for support and repair ships. The Grand Assault mil...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! We’ve just released a small hotfix (1.19.0.1) to address two of the issues that we’re seeing right now. There was a particular crash related to the Spanish civil war kicking off into a four-way civil war and the new Army HQ feature. There was an issue where the TaoG DLC icon in the main menu wasn’t lighting up properly if you have the DLC unlocked. Both of these should now be fixed. Crashing and MODsWe also can see in our reporting telemetry that most other crashes players are experiencing right now are related to playing with mods. If you do crash, and you are 100% certain that you’re NOT playing with mods, please submit your crashes in the crashreporter tool so we can look into fixing them. Balance and stat bloatWe hear your concerns with balance & stat bloat, and we’re looking into this. We also see the complaints about command ability cost being affected by the general pla...

Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! The Decade A decade. It still feels strange to write. Hearts of Iron IV turns Ten this month, and somehow the most unbelievable number in our telemetry isn't the millions of techs researched or wars declared, it's this one: 39% of the people who started playing HoI4 back in 2016 are still playing today. Ten years on. Another is that HoI IV has been going on longer than WW2 actually took: 2194 days for WW2, 3652 (and counting) for HOI IV. The game has changed enormously since launch: most mechanics have deeper experiences, focus trees are very different and much more exhaustive, the AI plays the game better, and we are able to keep closer to the historical timeline than ever before. But the core vision, as described 12 years ago, still holds true. One thing we did not necessarily foresee, even if it was a core part of the vision at the start, was the adaptation of mods to the...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Here is another Open Beta Update for our upcoming Anniversary Patch, including some bugfixes, balancing and more naval AI improvements. We recently posted a survey as a way to check the community pulse, and it has given us interesting data. When looking at the data and the responses on social media, the majority of you believe that ironman should not be required for getting achievements, however playing with mods should suppress getting achievements. We also hear the outcry for allowing specific mods and achievements, but this is unfortunately unfeasible for us. Quite a few people also talked about the potential of getting achievements when playing multiplayer. We’ve not decided on a specific course yet, but we are leaning towards a more bespoke achievement unlock requirements. Meaning that some will require ironman, and others don’t. For now, this is intended to be the last...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Batya here with another patch. The focus is around Czechoslovakia’s content that was recently released with Peace For Our Time. Besides that there have been a few crashes that were fixed and included in this patch. I also want to extend a special thanks to the wonderful team behind Peace for our Time and all the balance changes, bug fixes, and other additions that they made since release! This is currently the last planned patch focused around the release of PfoT, but any additional issues will of course be picked up in future patches. We hope that you will enjoy these changes and as always let us know what you think and if you find any other issues do let us know! As a final note, the team added a little secret and wanted to provide a little hint so here is my (maybe not so) cryptic hint: A.E.I.B.U. Happy hunting and see you on the Sudeten front! Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Today we have an update to the open beta, including a sneak preview of the anniversary patch we have planned. This update includes quality of life improvements, bugfixes, gameplay and balance changes, naval AI improvements, and a sizable amount of performance work. It also includes the balance changes from the previous balance open beta. Early next week we will be back with more news on Thunder at our Gates. NAVAL AIWe’ve been looking at some of the key pain points behind the naval AI’s underperformance. One of the reasons was the way that the AI decided to use its strikeforces, and another was how it decided where to prioritize its navy. Previous patches significantly improved naval AI compared to the NCNS launch version, but it still struggled to react quickly to changing situations. Here are some of the problems we’ve seen and how they have been addressed.AI wasn’t making...

Read full update on Steam ↗Hello Generals & Admirals! It’s been a few weeks since the release of our cosmetic pack “Warships of the Pacific”, and we’ve released two hot fixes. And I thought I would take some time to give you all an update on what is happening in the studio. Developer responses to this will be a bit slower than normal, as Sweden is out of office until Tuesday. Open Beta As some of you know we have a current open beta available where one of our game designers is looking into rebalancing the navy. We are aware of the submarines being a bit too easy to spot now, and some of the changes related to that in the open beta, will be released with Peace for our Time. Peace for our Time We are planning to release Peace for our Time soon and we are planning to be back very soon with news about our first Focus Pack! This will also be our second release working together with modders from the community, and we...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Open Beta Announcement Open Beta Update I Best to leave your feedback for this specific beta version in this thread. Bugs go in the bug report forum. You can also start a separate thread, just make sure to reference this open beta and mention something like in the title. I’m Zwirbaum, Game Designer for Hearts of Iron, and this time around Open Beta arrives a little bit earlier - on Thursday, instead of the usual Friday! (Good Friday in Sweden is a Bank Holiday). Because of the faster release of this update than normal, this means that it will spend less time in the oven than usual. Most of my focus right now will likely continue on tweaking the submarines, and their detection & stealth mechanics. I would gladly appreciate letting me know - how does the balance feel when using or fighting against submarines? (Of course ideally after trying out Open Beta Update II). Responses...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! (Following our Open Beta Announcement) We have now locked the first OB thread, so be sure to continue leaving your feedback in this thread. Bugs* go in the bug report forum. You can also start a separate thread, just make sure to reference this open beta and mention something like in the title. I’m Zwirbaum, Game Designer for Hearts of Iron. It is Friday and it is time for the first update to the Open ‘Balance’ Beta. There have been quite a number of responses to the beta, on the forum, Reddit, Steam or Discord channel (if there have been more places, I may have missed it somewhat), which definitely felt great! Unfortunately, while I tried to answer as many questions, suggestions, and opinions (even those contesting whether I am a real person…), I could not provide a reply to all of them. Rest assured that I have read most, if not all of them. Also at some point I need to ac...

Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! For the release of the Warships of the Pacific, we’ve made some updates to the model selector in the equipment and division designers in the free patch. These changes required some minor breaking changes related to the camera settings for the 3d model views. Hence, you’ll need to do some minor updates if you have overridden these camera settings in your mod. We hope that this guide will help you to make any required updates to your mods. Whom will this affect? Only relevant for mods that modify any of these camera settings files of the designers (game version 1.17.4), found in hoi4/game/gfx/3dviewenv/: equipment_editor_small_portrait.txt equipment_editor.txt plane_designer_3d_preview.txt tank_designer_3d_preview.txt template_editor.txt template_small_portrait.txt What if I don’t do anything? Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Small update on No Compromise, No Surrender | Patch 1.17.4. Very recently we started receiving reports of certain Tech Bonuses stacking too much. We quickly looked into this and discovered that this was clearly not working as Designed. Hence, this small Hotfix: Bugfix Fixed a bug where research bonuses were no longer claimed (and thus always active)
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Since the first open beta release we’ve focused on a few areas to continue to develop, before releasing the update full. Naval AI We continued to look at naval AI and making them perform better, we are happy to say that they are in a much better place compared to 1.17.3. That said, we have a few more things to work on, which we will do through future game updates. For example, the AI can run out of screens, which means there could be no patrols out, and without patrols a strikeforce is useless. The AI might have some capitals left to defend against naval invasions, but they won’t today. Sure it’s costly and not very efficient to patrol with capitals, but as a last resort you probably should. We’ve been getting some excellent feedback from the community, of which we are super appreciative! Air to Ground Part of the 1.17 release was fixing a bug that plagued the game since NCN...
Read full update on Steam ↗Generals! Batya here again. We’ve gotten a lot of input on the beta patch and we really appreciate it, thank you. While reading all your comments we decided that there are a few things that we want to work on before going live with our next patch, especially the Germany VS Soviet balance and Naval AI. We’ve been testing internally and have made some additional changes to Germany’s AI so they produce the correct things and overall perform better as a result. Additionally we increased the Soviets’ mastery gain somewhat; let’s see how it balances out after this patch. Regarding the Naval AI, we’re looking at adjusting some of the templates and the AI’s willingness to fight naval battles. We have seen some results but some issues still remain, such as retreating from battles too quickly, before any decisive battle can take place. With this in mind we looked into changing some more structu...
Read full update on Steam ↗Welcome back, everyone, PDX_Gorion here! We are back from our winter break and I wanted to keep you in the loop of what is going on in snowy Stockholm. Last year was an eventful year for us, with the release of Graveyard of Empires, Prototype Vehicles and No Compromise, No Surrender, and this year is no different with our ten year anniversary happening as well, beyond all the stuff that we promised in Expansion Pass 2. We will continue to work on patches in the new year, and part of the team will start on the next big thing, while another part of the team continues to work hard on Thunder at our Gates. I want to highlight the post that Arheo wrote earlier this year, where he discussed various high level topics if you want to have a sneak peek of stuff that we might be working on more.As last I leave with you a breakdown of our telemetry on Doctrine usage. (Note, these are stats by real players only, not AI!)Grand DoctrinesA breakdown of various countries and which Grand Doctrine they end up choosing. No real big surprises here, as most of these are pre-set from the start. And lest we forget, yes, we continue to read your bug reports following the release of No Compromise, No Surrender, and we’re grateful for the amount of feedback you’re giving us! If you’d like to get involved, you can read our Guidelines on how to write a Bug Report here! Read full update on Steam ↗Hey everyone, It's been a week and a half, and we deployed a few patches now. We continue with post release support, slowly working our way down the bugs reported and I wanted to give all of you an update on what you can expect before we close down for the winter holiday. - This week you can expect the changes talked about in the previous ‘Coal Update’ post and these will be released with the 1.17.2 patch. It also contains over 100 bug fixes & improvements. - We continue with AI improvements, specifically we are looking at various edge cases that the AI has trouble handling, and fixing these will make the Naval AI improve overall. - After this patch, we are working towards a 1.17.3 patch that we aim to release this year. Please keep submitting bugs, as we look at all of them. We highly recommend that bug reports are posted in the Bug Report section of our Forum, as that is where we tr...
