"AE: Archeological Expedition" takes you to 18 dig sites inspired by real locations around the world. Pick up your tools, clear away the earth, and discover what history left behind. From tiny Bronze Age beads to golden Egyptian amulets, every artifact is a small surprise waiting in the soil.
Every artifact in the game is inspired by real archaeological finds. Uncover Egyptian amulets, Roman mosaics, Greek gold wreaths, and Persian cylinder seals. Each comes with a hand-written description explaining its historical significance, materials, and the era it belongs to.
Three trusty tools, each with their own personality:
Brush - Gentle and careful. Every artifact comes out in perfect condition.
Shovel - A good balance of speed and care.
Pickaxe - Great for tough rock, but watch out for anything fragile underneath.
Each tool comes in multiple tiers. And when you're ready to go big, there's always the Bulldozer. Mind the sky, though - the storm ends every expedition, and every swing of a tool costs precious time. Spend it where it counts.
Every new find is recorded in your journal. Track your discoveries, see what you're missing, and complete your collection.
From the sands of Alexandria to the grasslands of York, 18 dig sites await across 10 historical eras, stacked layer upon layer - the deeper you dig, the further back in time you travel. Earn money from your finds to upgrade your gear, or spend it on Artifact Strongboxes for a chance to get artifacts that keep eluding you. The more Perfects you collect, the more sites you unlock.

It has been almost a week since AE was released, and we've spent that time reading your feedback. This update brings fixes for the issues you surfaced, plus a few new QoL ideas we came up with while fixing them. Time to drive We noticed that some players were a bit confused by the "pack up and leave" notification. It was always completely fine to just press "Escape" and "Exit", even with a few seconds still left on the clock. Leaving early doesn't hurt you in any way: everything you've already collected is yours, and the only things you forfeit are the artifacts still in the ground. So we parked a pick-up truck next to the dig site, and you can click it to leave. Don't worry, you'll get a confirmation dialog, same as when you exit through the menu. We also adjusted the tutorials to make it clear that leaving early is totally fine, and that the pick-up is the easiest and, honestly, the...
Read full update on Steam ↗Fixed another softlock in the Collections tutorial. Opening an era from the journal's era index could bounce you back to the index with no way to progress. Thanks to everyone who sent a report.
Read full update on Steam ↗A new soundtrack Version 1.4.0 replaces the music across the whole game. All three music styles you can pick in Options now play new tracks. Time Pressure An original theme commissioned for AE from composer Wazir. Pitch shifting works exactly as before, so the music tightens as your dig clock runs down. Upbeat and Lyric Both styles are built from new track sets, ten tracks for Upbeat and seven for Lyric, so the music you dig to is completely different in either mode. You can switch styles at any time in Options, under Music Style. P.S. A cautionary tale for fellow developers Humble Bundle has been a great source of assets for us for years now. It is a great way to gather a nice collection for prototyping and jams, and to fill the less important asset roles in an actual game. I personally bought every asset bundle they offered, and Archeological Emergency, the original game jam prototy...
Read full update on Steam ↗Last weekend we were happy to observe Daskalos playing our game on stream. We took his feedback and ran with it: this update brings the most important changes from it, while other ideas found their place in our internal roadmap. Sandstone, not fossils It was pointed out to us (by multiple people, actually) that using fossils as a soft obstacle was unwise. Fossils are rare guests at real dig sites, and when one does turn up, it gets carefully preserved, not smashed through with a pickaxe. So the bone piles blocking your dig are gone. In their place: Sandstone. Break it with the Pickaxe, exactly as before. Unlike fossils, sandstone deserves everything it gets. Better archaeology The tutorial dig site now layers its eras in proper stratigraphic order: Islamic on the surface, Medieval in the middle, Roman at the bottom. Several dig sites got their era lineups revised for the same reason....
Read full update on Steam ↗This is an overall polish update. We went through all systems and polished all rough edges and possible weak spots.
Read full update on Steam ↗This is a Post-Fest update: we went back through the festival coverage and addressed all the issues we saw players run into, along with new audio options, gentler onboarding for new diggers, and per-profile leaderboard control. Audio & music New Music Style setting: choose Time Pressure (default), Upbeat, or Lyric. Each style has its own set of tracks and varies between sessions, and you can switch mid-dig. The "ticking clock" pitch-shift is now optional (Time Pressure only), with a Max Pitch slider. Quieter, more consistent default volumes and a calmer mix. New-player guidance New diggers now get gentle, on-the-job tips and friendlier early dig sites that ease off as you find your footing. Experienced players are unaffected. Leaderboards & profiles You can now opt a profile out of the public leaderboards (Options > Accessibility). Opting out removes that profile's scores from the pub...
Read full update on Steam ↗Thanks to player ЖВОТНЕ for flagging a journal soft-lock in the Collections & Eras tutorial — now fixed. Fixes: Fixed a soft-lock that could trap the journal during the Collections & Eras tutorial. Minor stability fixes.
Read full update on Steam ↗We were informed that the native Linux build had compatibility issues on some Linux distributions. Thanks, MemLeakD, for the heads-up — our error-reporting tooling missed that one completely, because the game was dying before it could even give us a hint :DThat's now resolved. If you still run into issues on Linux, try reinstalling — and if that doesn't help, please let us know.Along with that urgent fix, we pushed some smaller fixes and improvements based on feedback and coverage:Fixes:The "Ownership could not be verified" jump-scare dialog should no longer appear unless there's a real ownership problem. We've made the Steam API pipeline more robust, so short-term connection hiccups and delayed initialization no longer throw us off the trail.Fixed the game icon on Linux.Improvements:Players are now given a set of faster (Gold-tier) tools during the tutorials, so they move along more...
