Under a Desert Sun - Development Update – The Daunting Final Stretch

Lately, development has been a strange mix of excitement and exhaustion.I’ve been recording footage for the upcoming release trailer, but every full run also turns into another extensive testing session. Roughly every 45 minutes, I still seem to uncover something that needs fixing—sometimes a minor visual issue, sometimes an old bug that has somehow survived for months. It is honestly a little daunting. On one hand, it is wonderful to see how far the game has come. On the other, each complete playthrough reminds me how much polish still goes into making an Early Access game feel truly solid. The good news is that these recording sessions are helping me squash a lot of those remaining issues. The final voice acting is nearly complete, trailer production is moving forward, and the game is steadily becoming more stable and refined. For now, it is back to testing, fixing, recording—and then...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - Small dev update

Small development updateI’m currently doing a cleanup pass on the area maps in Under a Desert Sun. Until now, many of them were still temporary maps based on literal top-down screenshots from the editor, with a shader applied on top. That worked fine while building and testing, but it never really looked like a proper part of the game.Thats better! The goal now is to bring those maps to a usable state and make them better resemble both the actual areas and the visual style of the game. It’s one of those improvements that may sound small on paper, but it really helps the game feel more polished and complete.Alongside this, I’ve also added new map tech for larger areas. These maps will now have a fog-of-war style system, so instead of revealing everything immediately, they gradually uncover as you explore. I’ve also added a small “you are roughly here” indicator for larger maps. It is no...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the cursed Vessel: Beta Update

🚀 Performance First — Preparing for Early AccessAs many of you know, I’ve been focusing heavily on performance improvements before moving further into new story content and major gameplay additions. My approach is simple: Every time I add significant new content, I follow it up with a dedicated performance optimization pass to make sure the game remains smooth and stable.During the latest dungeon expansion, it became clear that the new content was placing considerable load on both the GPU and CPU. That exposed several areas where deeper optimization was necessary.I’m very glad we addressed this now. These improvements directly benefit the Early Access release, because my goal is simple:👉 I want as many people as possible to be able to play comfortably. My standard lower-end test machine — my beloved Steam Deck — now runs the game extremely well.We are now consistently above 40 FPS eve...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - Beta update 4.10

Quick note before the details: As you may have noticed, I’m now fully focusing on beta branch updates. The demo will remain available and stable, but from this point onward it will only receive major bug fixes. All new content, systems, story beats, and technology will land on the beta branch first. This update marks the first major beta-only release and significantly advances the story, gameplay, and underlying technology of Under a Desert Sun.🏛️ New Dungeon ContentAdded a brand-new two-layer dungeon, introducing a larger and more varied dungeon structure.Implemented the end boss of the new dungeon.Added extensive story elements and environmental set dressing throughout the dungeon to strengthen narrative context and atmosphere.🛡️ New Combat TechnologyIntroduced shield technology for enemies and bosses.Certain enemies can now be shielded, preventing damage until the shield is broken,...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - News update

Hey everyone,Quick heads-up about how builds will be handled going forward for Under a Desert Sun.I’m moving toward a clear separation between the public Demo and the active Beta / Early Access builds.Right now, the demo classes aren’t entirely complete anymore, but unfinished content can’t be reached during normal play. As development ramps up, maintaining both a special demo build and a fast-moving beta build is becoming increasingly difficult. What’s going to change:The public demo will receive one final cleanup and polish pass, then be locked as a stable demo build. The demo will return to normal progression rules — meaning you won’t be able to access all class cards or most skills anymore like during Next Fest. The Beta / Early Access builds will continue independently, with ongoing changes, new content, balance tweaks, and unfinished systems. For Next Fest, it made sense to let play...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel: News update!

In this update, I wanted to highlight further progress on populating the dungeon and increasing overall visual fidelity. The spaces are steadily becoming more lived-in, with more props, set dressing, and environmental detail to reinforce the atmosphere of the Dweller dungeon.Alongside that, I’ve implemented a lever system that can be used for puzzles and light exploration-based objectives, such as opening doors or unlocking new paths. This gives the dungeon more interactive moments beyond combat and helps pace exploration a bit more.In addition, I’ve built some underlying tech to support randomization of essential object placement within the dungeon. This system allows key elements — such as certain puzzle components or entrances to the second level — to spawn at different predefined locations each time you enter. The goal here is to ensure that repeat runs through the dungeon feel sli...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - Patch Beta 4.03

Hi there! As many of you know, I’m working hard toward getting the Early Access release ready for Q1, with new content, new story beats, and a fully playable Act One featuring two classes. If you’ve been following the recent news posts, you may have noticed updates about an upcoming new dungeon and a lot of new technology being built behind the scenes. Whenever possible, I deliberately backport this technology to the demo, so it stays as consistent as possible with the full game experience. And that… is exactly what this update is about. Notes below!✨ Additions & ImprovementsAdded new visibility technology that makes roofs and other blocking objects fade / become see-through when the player moves underneath them, ensuring the character always remains visible.Reworked the light jitter on fire-based light sources. Fire lights now produce more natural, organic shadow movement, replacing th...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel, progress update

I’ve started active work on content beyond the demo, beginning with the Dweller dungeon — the immediate next part of the story right after where the demo ends.I previously shared a short video showing an early look at this dungeon, and I wanted to follow up by continuing to show progress so you can compare how it evolves over time. Before showing comparisons, a quick technical deep dive. With these more narrow, enclosed areas, I ran into a classic top-down game challenge: the player must always remain visible, even when moving underneath structures or environmental objects. To solve this, I built a custom system that dynamically manipulates materials. When the player moves underneath geometry, parts of buildings smoothly transition to semi-transparent or fully transparent, depending on the situation. By blending between these two states, structures appear to temporarily “melt away,” keep...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - Patch Notes Beta 3.47

Hi there!Alright. This is it. This is the last bit of big tech I needed to make for the loot system. It's a small addition really but an important one. Unique loot items. Basically Items that do not get their stats randomly but instead are custom made and named by..well..me ;) The idea being that I can now make items that fit a quest really well or are just super rare/cool/weird.Clarification: Updates on Both Beta & DemoRight now we have both a beta branch and a public demo. Because we're still developing core technology for the game (loot, inventory, wearables, unique items, etc.), I am currently pushing all updates to the demo as well, so everyone can help test them. That means the new unique item added in this patch is in the demo too — findable by everyone!FixesFixed the Soldier’s pose during inventory moments. Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - Loot and inventory update

OverviewThis milestone marks one of the largest technical and gameplay updates to date — a full overhaul of the loot, inventory, and item stat systems. See below!ImprovementsThe “Back to Main” button now properly clears the screen when returning from the load character menu, resulting in a smoother and cleaner transition. 🔄✨Rewrote the tutorial text database to make it more streamlined and user-friendly from a development standpoint — much easier to manage and expand now. 🧠💾Added a subtle animation to the story sketches in the class intros, giving them a more connected and integral feel alongside the journal entries and voice acting. 🎨📖🎙️BugfixesFixed an issue where the delete button in the load screen would remain active after pressing Start, potentially allowing a character being loaded to be deleted. The delete button is now properly disabled and unavailable once you hit Start. 🗑️...

ImprovementsRewrote the shield weapon code for the Soldier. Bounces, damage, and effects are now more reliable and consistent — making it far more effective against enemies. 💥🛡️Made adjustments to the save system. Initially, it created backup saves even when you hadn’t used the Load Character or New Character paths. This behavior has been removed, as it could introduce oddities for existing saves. The system is now simplified — new save files can only be created through the Main Menu or Load Screen, making it more reliable, easier to debug, and safer overall. 💾UIUpdated the XP bar art to make it cleaner and less messy — reduced over-detailing for a more readable look.Added a cooldown bar for the special weapon — it’s now much clearer when you can use it again. ⏳⚔️Class AdjustmentsIncreased melee damage for the Adventurer class. Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - Beta 3.43 Patch Notes

As feedback on the early demo release has died down a bit I am slowly going to start going back to the Early access content. The first few things I work on will be pretty technical so it is likely I will push these things to the demo as well so people get a good idea of the game in EA state. However I will soon be going on to bits of the story that will not be in the demo and thus branching off to a beta build. Why is he telling us all that? Well, just to make clear that..hopefully..I can release later this year and you will indeed get new content, new skills and new stuff to do once you buy the game ;)!In the meantime I was feeling a bit artistic so:ImprovementsAdded more enemy zone areas to make calmer regions feel more alive and interesting.Could not resist improving sandstorm particles in several areas — it just gives everything more of that true desert feel. 🌵💨 Kind regards, Ray...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel: Beta 3.39 Patch Notes

Alright! Immediate bugfixes coming from demo play have started to tone down, and I’ve begun picking up normal tasks from my work board again. All of these updates are still relevant for the demo, but they also improve the game in general. For now, I’ll continue pushing these updates to the demo as well, since they either improve convenience or fix smaller issues I’ve noticed myself. This update focuses on monsters, menus, and saves!ImprovementsIncreased the difficulty of the 3rd boss. (Not telling you which one — spoilers, man!)Added functionality allowing enemies to ignore certain hits in terms of animation, preventing their attack states from being interrupted. This is especially useful for bosses — you can no longer cheese your way to victory by making them constantly stagger.Used the new system to make several bosses tougher to fight, and gave some common fast enemies a chance to...

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - Beta 3.38 Patch Notes

It’s never a good time to receive news about a security issue in the Unity engine — but getting it right before Next Fest is especially rough. I had very deliberately planned to wait with upgrading Unity until after Next Fest to ensure a smooth ride for all demo players. However, security is nothing to take lightly and must always remain a top priority. That’s why I’ve chosen to upgrade now to the version containing the security fix. Fortunately, Unity provided all the means needed to upgrade to a safe version.Any feedback on potential new bugs introduced by this upgrade is greatly appreciated.SecurityUrgent fix: Due to Unity Security Advisory Sept-2025-01, the project has been upgraded to Unity 6000.2.6f2.Security first! The demo should continue to run smoothly, but if you spot anything unusual, let me know right away.

There I was, completely ready for the press presentation of Next Fest. A demo ready to be played by millions… no… BILLIONS of journalists! (What!? A person can dream, ok?)And then… I noticed… the Adventurer class could one-hit kill bosses starting at about level 5. Oops.So I did some serious maths, adjusted things, and everything is fixed now. I think. Likely. Probably… maybe? Dear god let me know?Jokes aside, here come the notes!BugfixesFixed improper scaling of health and melee damage. Classes would increase too fast, making the later game too easy. (This was a math bug — so technically I did not nerf our classes, hah! 😉)Some statistics were unclear in the skill menu. The melee and health indicators should now better reflect the actual health and damage values you see.Special thanks to Jack Walljumper (Discord nick) for pointing this out!Kind regards, Raymond

Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel - progression update

Hello Seekers,I thought it was a good moment to highlight some fresh progress! Development continues at full speed, starting with new environments and further work on the main quest. As some of you in the Discord already know, I use the main quest as a way to push myself to build new systems. I'm now at the point where everything leading up to the final moments of the main quest is functional—both tech-wise and, for the most part, art-wise.That means it was time to move the story forward again, which in turn forced me to create new areas, enemies, and gameplay features. One such feature is an improved day and night system, with smoother lighting transitions and smarter particle effects that fade out instead of abruptly disappearing. Below you'll find a quick idea of the new day/night features and a few in-editor screenshots showing the early stages of these new zones.Creating these ne...

    Performance Update

{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45534103/0dbb010153a6582344408a76138adebabfd291d6.gif Performance is key in a game like this. The Steam Deck is a prime target for testing, and beta revealed that enemies’ individual search-and-behavior loops were impacting performance. A full AI overhaul merged those cycles under a single “Mother” controller (yes, a nod to Alien’s onboard computer), unlocking (as you can see in the small vid above): A stable 45 FPS on Deck—no FSR or other upscalers needed Dramatically reduced CPU load during the wildest firefights Rock-steady frame pacing even in the most demanding areas Cracking this “Mother” system feels like mastering the more difficult parts of gamedesign. It is a truly proud achievement that brings the project right on target for Deck performance. More polish is coming—stay tuned!

    Developer Update: Skill System Progress

{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45534103/7e15d0657de73b13dc6d425c1a7b26fe49a1ce14.gif Hi everyone! I’ve been working on further developing the skill system for the two playable classes currently in Under a Desert Sun: Seekers of the Cursed Vessel. The goal is to give players meaningful choices through a layered approach to character customization: On the right side of the screen, you'll find a classic Diablo II-style skill tree—both in appearance and philosophy. It’s deliberately old-school: no free respecs, so each decision matters and helps shape a distinct build. Complementing that is a more flexible card slot system, which lets you adjust your playstyle on the fly. These cards introduce powerful modifiers and unique mechanics that can significantly alter your approach to combat and exploration. The interaction between the two systems should create exciting variety. For example, one skill card...
