It's 2007. You're an unpaid moderator on a dying internet forum.
Inspired by Papers, Please , Permaban is a forum moderation game about interpreting rules, making judgment calls, and dealing with people who hate your decisions.
A user wants to know who has the leaked build. Someone found the admin's old profile page and is asking whether to post it. A member since day one says the new rules are garbage, in those words. The spam bot might actually be a real person.
Every ban needs a rule citation, and every tool has its own price. Moderate too hard and the regulars stop posting. Moderate too soft and the board drowns in raids, scams and flame wars.
Nothing in a shift is on a clock. No timer, no post that rots if you leave it. The queue waits while you decide.
Between shifts, the people you banned come back to argue, the other mods ask for favours and remember your answer, and the admins rewrite the rulebook under you.
And the forum is only one window. The machine boots cold, POST beep and all, into a desktop you can actually use: a browser, a media player with a real playlist, a paint program, and if you open the wrong file, an archiver that will not stop asking you to buy it. Almost none of it is required, and almost all of it is hiding something. Numbers the calculator was never meant to take. Archives nobody asked you to open. A Flash game portal that one night becomes the job. The forum is where you work. The desktop is where the game keeps its secrets.
Moderate forum posts
Ban, warn, censor, investigate, scan a link, lock the thread, IP ban, or nuke. Or leave it alone, which is also a call
Cite the correct rule every time you ban, warn or IP ban
Every tool has its own price, and skipping straight to the ban button is not free
No timer on a campaign shift. The queue waits while you decide
Answer ban appeals between shifts, with the original post as your only evidence
A break room where the other mods ask for favours, and remember your answer
Deal with contradictory moderation policies
Track ban evaders and sockpuppets
A spam filter that barely knows what spam is
Keep your job: one bad shift and the admins notice
Read DMs, forum drama, and user complaints
A whole 2007 desktop to hide in: a browser, a media player, a paint program, a file explorer, a calculator
Endless mode with escalating chaos, and a break every twenty posts or six minutes, whichever lands first
Auto-save between campaign shifts, so a campaign survives you closing the game
700+ handmade forum posts
28 achievements
A soundtrack you queue up yourself in a period media player
Multiple board themes inspired by classic forums
Three playable games buried in the machine, and one night when beating one of them is the job
Recurring users and moderator drama
Retro desktop sounds, boot screen included
And way too many easter eggs...
This is a reading game, and it is all in English: 2007 forum English, typos and slang included. The answer is in the text, so skimming, or fighting the language, turns the whole thing into noise.
It is also a period piece. One specific corner of the internet, rendered from memory: if you were on a forum in 2007, half of this will feel like a room you used to live in. If you were not, it still works, but the game never leaves that year.
A campaign runs about 40-80 minutes, longer if you stop to read everything and poke at the desktop. Endless mode is where the rest of the hours are. Nothing here is a forty hour game.
The posts include harassment, threats, people trying to expose each other, and users being plainly cruel, because that is the material the job is made of.
This game is for you if:
You read the whole thread before picking a side
You were on a forum in 2007, or want to know what that was like
Poking at a fake operating system until it gives something up sounds like a good night
It is probably not for you if:
You want action, or any pressure faster than a hard decision
You measure a purchase in hours of content
2007 internet drama sounds exhausting rather than funny

Hey mods, Two reports from a Wave 6 / Endless session, both fixed. FixedStapley quit in a loop. His Wave 6 resignation came back every 30 seconds no matter what you answered, and Endless got one every half minute for the whole shift. He now quits once per run. Answer him and it stays answered. "Fine, leave" means it. Letting him go used to close the balloon and nothing else; he was back with a tip 20 seconds later. Now he stays gone until the run ends. Admin memos, admin warnings, Dennis and the "rep under 35" warning still reach you. Those were never his to begin with. The game stopped re-teaching returning players. The first-contact balloons (the break room welcome, the veteran badge, the new-tool intros, Dennis, the Mod Log and the rest) fired again on every new campaign, on every Continue after reopening the game, and on every Endless shift. They now fire once per profile. Reset A...
Read full update on Steam ↗If you play on a Mac and the game kept asking for microphone access, this is the fix. The game never records anything. macOS was reading the way the audio engine opens headphones and USB interfaces as a mic request, and it asked again on every launch because the app was unsigned. The Mac build is now signed so the system stops asking, and the game no longer sits behind that dialog.Nothing changes on Windows or Linux. If it still shows up for you after updating, tell me which macOS version and what headphones or audio interface you use.
Read full update on Steam ↗Hey mods,Another maintenance patch. Nothing here adds content. Every item is the game doing what it already claimed to do, plus two things it should have claimed. If you hit anything that still feels off, the discussion board is the fastest way to reach me. Thanks for reading the rules before you moderate. The flame war penalty is gone. When a thread boiled over, the game took 3 rep between your actions and the red toast read like you had done something wrong. Now you get the pile-on of posts and a heads-up naming the thread, and nothing else. Reputation and points only move on your own calls. The restart charge from the update dialog went with it.The Link Scanner backs you up. Scan a link, get THREAT, ban it under §5, and the game scored it as a gray call, or worse if a thread was burning somewhere on the board. A THREAT verdict now makes the ban a malware ban wherever the post came f...
Read full update on Steam ↗I did not expect this many of you. Permaban is a game about reading a forum in 2007, made mostly by one person, and I went into launch week hoping a handful of people would find it. Instead the reviews, the discussion threads and the emails kept coming, from moderators who said it felt accurate to people who had never touched a forum and stuck with it anyway. Thank you. I read every one of them, and nearly everything in this patch comes straight from what you wrote. Keep it coming: the discussion board is the fastest way to reach me.Included in v1.0.1:Threads no longer bill you for a fire you never saw. A thread heating up in the background could hit "flame war" and cost you reputation before a single post from it had reached your queue. Some of you read that as a hidden timer, and you were right. Now a thread cannot charge you until you have handled one of its posts. It still heats u...
Read full update on Steam ↗NewBan Appeals. The people you banned come back to argue. After Wave 2 the shift does not start until you clear a queue of three cases: the post you banned, quoted with the rule you cited, and their side underneath. Two buttons, no tools. Sometimes they are right. The plea never tells you which. From Wave 3 on it is optional overtime.Overturn a ban that was sound and the account comes back next shift doing the same thing, with the same profile in Investigate. The break room asks you things. Two or three decisions a night, each with its price on the button: cover a board nobody is on, work a backlog, let a wave of signups through. Take it and the next shift runs longer. Pass and it costs reputation, and passing gets more expensive every time. The other mods ask you for things too. Help them and you carry a favour into the next shift: someone covers your second board, pulls a full record,...

Read full update on Steam ↗Shop items now do what they sayAll four consumables (2x Points, Rep Shield, Mountain Dood, Borton AV) were being cleared the moment you left the shop, before the first post of the wave you bought them for. Spam Filter was sold as PERMANENT and its only effect was a one-time bump that decayed on its own. Both work properly now. Their prices have never been playtested against working effects, so tell me if the shop economy feels off.Dennis Sharp finishes his story57% of campaigns ended without seeing the last phase of the arc in the wave named after him. Wave 6 now guarantees the whole thing, and the arc only moves forward on encounters you actually read. His climax also used to render behind the server maintenance screen, at 15% opacity, with the sting playing under a pause. The forum remembers who people areThe same username could show up twice in one shift as two different accounts, w...

Read full update on Steam ↗Hello, fellow moderators. The media player on the desktop was a prop with a chiptune behind it. It is a media player.Six tracks stream as real MP3s, and the filename the LCD scrolls is the actual file. When one ends it advances to the next, like a playlist should. The seek bar is draggable. Click or drag anywhere on it to scrub. The elapsed clock and the thumb follow the real playhead instead of counting on their own.The vol and bal sliders are real controls. Vol drives the Music channel of the tray mixer, so the two stay in sync and it persists with the rest of your audio settings. Bal actually pans the music, fills outward from a centre tick, and re-centres on a double click.Three-state transport. Pause holds the track where it is and lights up the way play does. Stop kills it and rewinds the clock to 00:00. The LCD glyph shows all three, and the visualizer freezes while paused instea...
