Perennial early access game Project Zomboid hit a new concurrent player record after a huge map update added reworked towns, a spooky orphanage and '400 procedural basements'

It's been a big week for Project Zomboid, the wildly successful zombie survival sim that, like a doomsday prepper holed up in a fortified basement, simply refuses to leave Steam early access. Its first major build update since 2021 coincided with a slight price increase for The Indie Stone's undead phenomenon, but this didn't stop the game from setting a new record for concurrent players on Steam... BUILD 42 STABLE PLANS

Project Zomboid version 42.20 will be coming direct to the stable public branch Wednesday, the 29th of July. Details on what this will entail will follow after, by way of celebration, the unveiling of our new Build 42 Steam Store trailer! This has been lovingly crafted by our Art Director Ayrton, captured by Amz, been blessed with 3D renders by Werlias, and received much sound love from Matteo and the team from Arrival. Our thanks too to our voice talent Michael Billington, Gemma Acosta, Jane Perry and Stefan Ashton - all of whom knocked it out of the park. So, onto some further important details on next week's excitement. THOSE WANTING TO STAY ON 41 Build 41 savegames clearly will not be compatible with Build 42. 34. New Project Zomboid update improves ranged combat, shotguns, and chocolate milk

A new Project Zomboid update has just launched, and it's a big one. It's been a while since we last heard from The Indie Stone, but that's just because the team's been cooking hard on its latest overhaul for one of the best zombie games on Steam. The latest round of Project Zomboid patch notes kicks off with a notable adjustment that ramps up the risk-reward balance of ranged weapons. Then it fixes disappearing shotgun damage, upgrades dryers, and makes chocolate milk more realistic than ever. There's a lot to go through, so let's get started. Read the rest of the story... 35. New Project Zomboid update improves map, fixes spawns, and makes games longer

There are parts of Knox Country where I feel perfectly at home. The gas station at Fallas Lake is one of my mainstay bases. I also have a house picked out in Muldraugh - as long-term shelters go, it's far from optimal, but it's where I lived during my first ever game, and you always cherish your first ever game of Project Zomboid. Largely, though, The Indie Stone's post apocalyptic world feels dangerous and inscrutable. That, of course, is the idea, but navigating Knox - and sharing points of interest with other Zomboid players - can sometimes be frustratingly difficult. The new Project Zomboid update is here to help. Marking another vital overhaul to unstable build 42, it adds extra map details, fixes that immersion-spoiling issue with zombie spawns, and makes default games last longer. 36. Big new Project Zomboid update makes maps much more varied and realistic

There's a specific suburb in Muldraugh that I always use for a base; it's the one between Cortman Medical and the trailer park, just south of the gas station and the church. It's not because the houses are all on two floors, or because I often seem to find a working car there. It's because the zombies themselves seem to stay away - it's very lightly populated, and in Project Zomboid, the more alone you are, the better. But as much as safety, in Zomboid, I also relish unpredictability. It's the not knowing that keeps The Indie Stone's undead epic alive. With that in mind, the new Project Zomboid update for unstable build 42 is ideal. Read the rest of the story... 38. Major new Project Zomboid update transforms gun combat, cars, and hunting

Cars and guns. In Project Zomboid, these are simultaneously your best friends and your worst enemies. While it's true that you won't last long on foot, whenever you go driving, the noise of your engine attracts the undead, and - even though there's nobody else on the road - it's inevitable that you end up smashing into a parked car, a roadblock, or a tree. Likewise guns. Without a silencer, all it takes is one shot and the entirety of Knox Country's former population is on its way to gorge on your neck. With build 42 still in the developmental 'unstable' state, The Indie Stone has just put a fresh twist on PZ's driving and combat. The new Project Zomboid update is a bit of a game changer. 39. Giant Project Zomboid build 42 update makes zombies less scary and hints at NPCs

Whether it's State of Decay, Fallout, or DayZ, in post-apocalyptic survival games the biggest threat isn't zombies or monsters or mutants - it's other people. Until now, the existence of fellow survivors has only been hinted at in Project Zomboid, but given the success of mods like Week One, and the erstwhile prologue starring Bob and Kate Smith, it seems inevitable that NPCs will eventually return. Now, a big update to Project Zomboid build 42 perhaps lays the groundwork for that future, while also offering you a helping hand when it comes to dealing with Knox Country's undead. Project Zomboid build 42 is finally starting to feel more settled and complete. When it arrived at the end of 2024, the new version of the greatest (yes, greatest) survival game on PC frustrated some players, owing to the big changes that it introduced to aiming and lighting, and some of the bugs with the new animal husbandry mechanics. Looting has been a problem, too, and, but in order to fix everything, The Indie Stone has spent the last three months making one well-observed update after another. Now, the would-be rival to DayZ, Dying Light, and State of Decay feels like it's being consolidated - the new Project Zomboid update is seemingly putting some finishing touches on build 42. 41. Project Zomboid update adds new location, as tribute to beloved modder who died

The world of Project Zomboid is filled with references and easter eggs. Over in Louisville, you'll find the Romero Center For Performing Arts, a clear nod to undead maestro George Romero. The presenter on Life and Living TV is named Dean, presumably after DayZ's Dean Hall, and tucked away near Riverside is the Sunderland Hills Sanatorium, likely named for the imperiled protagonist of Silent Hill 2. But the latest Project Zomboid update brings to build 42 and to Knox Country a more meaningful homage in the form of a newly redesigned gun store. Read the rest of the story... 43. New Project Zomboid update rolls back the controversial build 42 loot changes

On its surface, Project Zomboid is a world of brutal survivalism, but check under the hood, specifically the enormous patch notes that The Indie Stone has been publishing since the arrival of unstable build 42, and you can see the delicate dance of values, metrics, and rebalances that really makes Knox Country turn. More than State of Decay 2, Dying Light, or DayZ, I think Zomboid is the best game of its kind on PC, but the latest version is called 'unstable' for a reason - there are still improvements to be made. The latest Project Zomboid update provides one such example. If the new looted building system has felt unfair or askew to you so far, The Indie Stone is apparently on the case. 46. The new Project Zomboid update has overhauled crafting, combat, and sandbox mode

No matter how experienced or proficient you are, several frightening questions hang heavy over every playthrough of Project Zomboid. They're available for the first few weeks, but what are you going to do when the water and power supplies finally run out? How are you going to craft weapons and other survival essentials if you can't find the right materials? And why can't you aim your gun up or down? As The Indie Stone continues to expand Project Zomboid build 42, and the greatest zombie game on PC accelerates away from rivals like DayZ, State of Decay, and Dying Light, a new Zomboid update provides solutions to those quandaries, and delivers myriad fixes. 47. Surprise new Project Zomboid update makes guns and combat way better in build 42

If you want to get a gun in Project Zomboid, you're going to have to work hard and take risks. Personally, I favor the army surplus store in Fallas Lake. The town is relatively small and the quantity of guns and bullets can be high. Nevertheless, you still need a sledgehammer to get into the armory. Same goes for the Louisville checkpoint and most of the police stations in Knox Country. It's a lot of investment and return isn't guaranteed. Proving that The Indie Stone's survival game has the edge on The Long Dark, DayZ, and Rust, another new Project Zomboid update for the unstable build 42 is already here, and it makes big improvements to how we find and use guns. 48. Project Zomboid maps have been revolutionized by an amazing new build 42 feature

I have this problem whenever I start a new game on Project Zomboid. I call it the death spiral. I spawn into a house but the loot containers don't have any useful weapons. So, I walk outside to go searching, and inevitably attract the attention of some zombies. This means I can't stop to search other buildings, so I have to keep walking... which attracts more zombies, which means I have even less time to search, and so on. If only there was some way to guarantee the presence of certain objects and resources. We're not quite there yet, but the new Project Zomboid update for unstable build 42 offers some small control over the randomized maps. Read the rest of the story... 50. Gigantic Project Zomboid update might make build 42 easier to survive

Project Zomboid is perhaps the most unforgiving survival game on PC. It's not that it's the hardest. It's more...the pure indifference. One of my most recent characters, I had managed to keep alive for more than three months. Stupidly I decided to check out Louisville. Attempting to run from a horde, I tripped over, dropped my machete and flashlight, and, well, you know what happened next. With The Indie Stone still tweaking build 42 unstable, a potential new Project Zomboid update has just been teased and, with changes to XP, crafting, and the zombies themselves, it could make staying alive much easier. 53. New Project Zomboid update makes combat in build 42 a lot better

Project Zomboid build 42 marks a huge transformation for The Indie Stone's undead opus. Alongside sweeping changes to central mechanics, we've also got new lighting, the addition of high-rise buildings, new crafting systems, wild animals, and even extra maps. But Zomboid's developer is far from finished with unstable 42. It's a tough world in the survival genre, and to keep Zomboid performing at its very best - and ahead of rivals like State of Decay 2 and DayZ - The Indie Stone has already dropped a new update to tweak and improve build 42's combat. 56. Project Zomboid developer issues statement about controversial build 42 artwork

Project Zomboid build 42, also known as 'unstable 42,' is finally here after a long wait, and it transforms the survival game with fresh maps, gameplay changes, and vital additions like high-rise buildings and the ability to sit down on couches. But the new version of The Indie Stone's DayZ, Dying Light, and The Forest rival has also been met with concerns regarding the new artwork used for loading screens. Players have commented that the art looks as if it may have been created using artificial intelligence, or AI tools. Now, one of Project Zomboid's developers shares a lengthy statement explaining how the artwork was commissioned, also responding to the claims regarding AI. Read the rest of the story...
